Makerspace and Studio Staff Guide

What to know when you staff a makerspace or studio desk

Free Materials and Consumables in the Makerspace

PPLD offers patrons a certain number of supplies for free when they visit a library makerspace. Whether they want to engrave a family photo on the laser cutter, 3D print a replacement part for their vacuum cleaner, or just learn how to use an embroidery machine, there will be materials available for them to use to test out designs and explore the space.

In every session, patrons have access to:

  • $1 worth (20 grams) of 3D printing.*

  • 1 piece of wood for the laser cutter (6” x 12” x 1/8").

  • 10 buttons for the button maker.

  • 1 piece of wood for the CNC (5" x 7" x 1/4").

  • 2 sheets of embroidery backing for the embroidery machine.

  • 1 sheet of vinyl and cardstock for the Silhouette Cameo or Curio die cutters (12" x 12").

*This amount is calculated from the standard $0.05 per gram rate for printing. Anything over that amount will be charged at the usual $0.05 per gram rate.

Consumables Purchasing

Consumable purchasing is primarily done by Strategy & Innovation. If you notice low stock of a consumable, please submit a Helpdesk Ticket with the category "Maker/Studio Equipment" and subcategory "Consumables" and CC the makerspace librarian for your space.

For 3D printer filament, we try to keep black, white, and gray for PETG and a wider variety of colors for PLA. If patrons request specific colors, include that in your email and we will try to include them in the next order if possible.

If you need tools or office supplies for your makerspace, you may need to reach out to your location's purchaser and use your location's makerspace budget. Use the table below to determine which accounts to use for a purchase. If you have any questions, please reach out to Cameryn Broin (cbroin@ppld.org)
