3D Printing

A guide for PPLD's 3D printers

3D Printer Badging

Becoming badged, or certified, to use the 3D printers during Makerspace Open Hours is simple and valid at all four PPLD makerspace locations. Follow the steps below to learn everything you need to know to use the machines.

Update June 25, 2021 -- 3D printers have been upgraded from Lulzbot Mini and TAZ 6 printers to Lulzbot Mini 2 and TAZ Workhorse printers. If you were badged to use the old models, your badging is still valid for the new printers. Otherwise, watch the video and take the quiz below to get badged.

Please note, the video and quiz contain information for the old 3D printer models and an older version of Cura than what is currently used in the makerspaces. Some policies and procedures have also changed since this video and quiz were created. We are working to update this video by fall 2021.

In the meantime, while this additional step is not required to complete the badging process, we recommend also doing the following after watching the video and completing the quiz below:

  • Visit the General Information tab for changes in machine locations and access.
  • Visit the Using / Operating the Machine tab for a PDF guide on the new printers. (This guide will also be available in the makerspaces when you are using the printer.)

1) Watch the video located on the bottom of this page. We recommend watching the entire video before proceeding to step 2, where you will take a quiz to ensure that you have the knowledge you need to use the machine safely and effectively.

2) Complete the assessment quiz. You must enter your own individual library card number at the beginning of the quiz. If you do not yet have your own library card, please visit any PPLD location and register with us.

You must answer all six questions correctly, so make sure to pay attention to the video. If you don't get them correct the first time, don't worry. Look for the "View Your Accuracy" link after you finish the quiz to see how you did. If you got a question wrong, you can go back and take the quiz again.

3) Make a reservation to use a 3D printer at a makerspace, or come in as a walk-in during open hours. Anyone under 18 years old must also turn in a paper Creative Space Use Agreement signed by a parent or guardian. See the General Information tab for more information on reservations and agreements.

4) When you come into the makerspace during Open Hours, please notify the staff member that you have completed your quiz. Have your library card number handy so we can look up your quiz results and certify completion.
