Recycle the Rainbow

There is nothing like the feeling of opening a fresh box of crayons and replacing the broken, worn-down crayons with fine-pointed new ones. Now the challenge is, what do I do with the old ones?

Instead of tossing them in the trash, consider reusing them! You might be familiar with melted crayon art, but have you ever thought about melting them down into molds and creating exciting new crayon shapes? We can help you with that!

Step 1: Gather all your broken crayons.

Step 2: Take off the paper if there is any still left on the crayon. It may be helpful to soak the crayons in soapy, warm water to help with this process.

Step 3: Break the crayons into small pieces and place them into a silicon mold of your choosing. You can separate them into similar colors, mix the colors up, or you can even add glitter. The possibilities are endless! There are tons of fun mold designs you can use as well. Get creative and have fun!

Step 4: Place the mold in the microwave or oven.

  • Using the microwave- microwave for about 5 -10 minutes*, checking on the crayons intermittently and continuing until the crayons are fully melted.

  • Using the oven- set on low heat (about 250° F), for approximately 45 minutes* or until the crayons are fully melted.

*Depending on the size of the molds it may take longer, or it may take a shorter amount of time.

Step 5: Carefully place the mold on a flat surface to let the crayons cool and harden.

Step 6: Enjoy your cool new crayons!
