A statewide service connecting individuals and families to needed resources

 

Visit 2-1-1 Colorado, call (866) 760-6489 toll-free, or text your ZIP code to 898-211 to get help with tax-related questions. Help is available in multiple languages, including Spanish. 

2-1-1 Colorado is a confidential and multilingual service connecting people to needed resources across the state. No matter where you live in Colorado, you can find information about resources in your local community. The 2-1-1 Colorado database has information on more than 8,000 services across the state of Colorado, including help with food programs, utilities and healthcare expenses, and mental health and substance use resources.

Colorado VITA/TCE

Free in-person tax help

 

The Colorado Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Colorado Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs provide free tax preparation and help for people making $60,000 or less. This is a great option if you feel overwhelmed and need extra help. You can make an appointment to prepare your taxes together with an IRS-certified volunteer. Or, you can drop in and drop off your tax documents, and a volunteer can prepare your taxes for you. 

Colorado VITA and TCE sites are operated by IRS partners and trained IRS-certified volunteers. VITA programs provide high-quality, trusted services that meet IRS standards. Every tax return requires a quality review check.

AARP Tax-Aide

Free online or in-person tax help

The AARP Tax-Aide provides free in-person and virtual tax assistance to anyone, with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate incomes. This is another great option if you need extra help. AARP Tax Assistance volunteers are IRS-certified and complete training every year to learn and understand the latest changes and additions to the tax code.

Taxpayer Advocate Service

Help with tax problems

 

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent advocacy organization that helps protect your rights as a taxpayer and helps you with tax problems you can’t fix on your own. Visit the Taxpayer Advocate Service website to get help for various issues like IRS system issues, financial hardship, or issues with fair and equitable treatment. Or, get assistance at a local or virtual Problem Solving Day. 

If you need assistance with Colorado state tax, you can contact Citizen’s Advocate. The Citizens' Advocate is different from a Taxpayer Advocate in that they can assist in all divisions within the Department of Revenue including Specialized Business Group, Colorado Lottery, Division of Motor Vehicles, and Division of Taxation. 

Low-Income Taxpayer Clinics 

Help with tax problems and legal issues

Low-Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITC) help people with lower incomes settle their tax problems with the IRS. LITCs can represent taxpayers before the IRS or in court on audits, appeals, tax collection matters, and other tax disputes. Services are free or available for a small fee depending on the location. 

UNIVERSITY OF DENVER GRADUATE TAX PROGRAM LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC (LITC) 
The University of Denver LITC is staffed by students in the University of Denver’s Graduate Tax Program, and it is supervised by tax law attorneys. The University of Denver LITC is located in Denver, CO. Call 303-871-6331 or email litc@law.du.edu to request an appointment.
