Overview

What are Creative Commons Licenses?

Creative Commons licenses are a set of legal tools managed by a non-profit organization that allows creators to license their work.  It has created a global movement that gives creators licenses that are more open than most copyright laws.

While Creative Commons is built on copyright law, it is designed to offer more options for licensing and sharing.  This platform helps to resolve the tension between what technology allows and what copyright hinders.  This alternative way to share work enable creators to share digital works on a global scale.

You can visit the Creative Commons website and the Creative Commons wiki to learn more.

Use the navigation on the left side to learn more about the history of the Creative Commons movement; relationship between CC licenses and copyright; the different CC license types; how to apply and enforce a CC license; and how to find a use CC licensed works.
