3D Printing

A guide for PPLD's 3D printers

3D Printer Filament Policy

PPLD provides a variety of filament types and colors for use with our 3D printers. Patrons are not allowed to bring outside filament for use with PPLD machines.

Types of Filament available in the makerspaces

PLA

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a stiff but brittle material. It is best used for low-stress applications, cosmetic prints, desk toys, and prototypes. It is the best material for beginners due to ease of printing and minimal warp. It is eco-friendly and made from annually renewable resources (corn-starch).

ABS

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a strong, ductile material with wear resistance and heat tolerance. It is best used for creating durable parts that need to withstand higher temperatures. ABS will contract when cooled, leading to potentially warped parts. Common uses are parts exposed to heat and UV like a car phone holder, or prototyping and interlocking parts like gears. It can also be post-processed with acetone to provide a glossy finish.

Conductive Filament

Conductive Filament is a modified PLA, designed for low voltage and low current circuitry. It is slightly flexible and has less layer adhesion. It is best used for functional prototypes, integrated circuitry, and complex wiring.

Magnetic Iron PLA

Magnetic iron filament prints similar to PLA but slower, with finished prints being heavy and hard. It is best used for cosmetic prints of busts, accessories, or aged-metal props. Best results can be achieved by rock tumbling, polishing, or wet sanding to achieve a super smooth surface finish, or an extra effect of rusting lightly for an aged and worn look.
