3D Printer Filament Policy

PPLD provides a variety of filament types and colors for use with our 3D printers. Patrons are not allowed to bring outside filament for use with PPLD machines.

Types of Filament available in the makerspaces

PLA

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a stiff but brittle material. It is best used for low-stress applications, cosmetic prints, desk toys, and prototypes. It is the best material for beginners due to ease of printing and minimal warp. It is eco-friendly and made from annually renewable resources (corn-starch).

PETG

PETG (Polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified), is a material that’s largely used in industrial applications, including advertising displays and electronic insulators. It also has several medical applications, such as implants, dental aligners, and packaging for medical elements.

In the 3D printing world, PETG is typically used in models that need good shock resistance or some flexibility, like snap-to-fit components. It’s also a go-to material for food-related prints, as it doesn’t deteriorate with water, isn’t toxic, and is FDA-approved.
